The best way to manufacture probiotic products, according to IPA

The International Probiotics Association (IPA) unveiled its guidelines for contract manufacturing organizations at the event, supporting the special requirements of what it takes to handle probiotics. “Probiotics are a unique category and they have very specific needs when you’re producing them,” said IPA’s executive director George Paraskevakos. Probiotic supplement sales are entering a slow growth phase. But why?

There is a definite softening of the market for probiotic supplements across all retail channels, according to data by Euromonitor International, a market research firm. Among the possible reasons is cannibalization in delivery forms, as probiotic ingredients are entering everything from bars to beverages, which may attract more consumers than capsules. Online consumer score a product must keep to ensure longevity in the marketplace

If a probiotic product is not averaging at least a 4.2 score out of 5 in online consumer reviews, it could be headed for trouble from a sales standpoint, according to a recent study by market research firm Lumina Intelligence (which is owned by the publishers of NutraIngredients-USA, William Reed Business Media).
