Maypro is now the exclusive US distributor for a spinach-derived weight management ingredient, Appethyl, supplied by Swedish company Greenleaf Medical.

The ingredient is processed using a proprietary method that extracts actives called thylakoids found inside spinach cells.

A thylakoid is a membrane-bound compartment inside chloroplasts and cyanobacteria that are found in spinach and other leafy greens, where photosynthesis happens.

Research suggests that the ingredient may cut hunger and increase the feeling of fullness. One such study, published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition in 2015, found that subjects who consumed Appethyl reported significant reductions in feelings of hunger and longing for food compared to a placebo group.

According to a press release by Maypro, there have been three human clinical studies conducted on Appethyl with four more underway.

“We are excited to be working with Greenleaf Medical to build the presence of Appethyl in the US market,” said Dan Lifton, president of Maypro’s proprietary and branded ingredients division.

“We believe that it has immense potential and look forward to working with customers on unique formulations and delivery methods.”
