The NRC is the operating arm of the National Academy of Sciences, a private, nonprofit institution chartered by Congress in 1863 to provide science, technology, and health policy advice to the government. It is not part of the U.S. government.
As part of the study, the NRC plans to hold a public meeting in Washington DC on September 16 and 16 that will include testimony from supporters and critics of GE crops.
Full details are available on the NRC website HERE, but the primary aim of the study is to "assess whether initial concerns and promises were realized since the introduction of GE crops" and "investigate new concerns and recent claims", says the NRC, which will unveil its findings in late 2016.
The GE crops study is sponsored by the New Venture Fund, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the National Academy of Sciences.
