Twenty-eight days of consuming the supplement, which contains caffeine, creatine, beta-alanine, amino acids, and B-vitamins, was not found to affect clinical blood markers in the kidneys or liver, nor did it affect resting heart rate or resting blood pressure, report researchers in the journal Nutrition Research.
“The overall findings of this investigation indicate that ingesting two servings (1 scoop) of the supplement Assault daily for 28 days may aid in improvements in [aerobic capacity] and lower body strength,” wrote researchers from Georgia Southern University, the United States Sports Academy, MusclePharm, and the University of Mobile.
“More so, the dose and frequency of supplementation used in the current investigation appears to be safe for healthy college-aged men.”
The pre-workout category has come under intense scientific, health, and regulatory scrutiny over the past couple of years, with much attention on the use of ingredients such as DMAA. However, Denver, CO-based MusclePharm, made an intentional decision to stay away from DMAA when it formulated Assault, Dr Roscoe Moore, CSO for MusclePharm, told us in 2012. The company, which was founded by former NFL wide receiver Brad Pyatt, has shown meteoric sales growth in its short life, and that strong performance was recognized with a “Top Vendor” award from GNC last year.
MusclePharm’s marketing is based on an aggressive fluorescent green logo (readily visible on the shelves) and aggressive names like Re-Con, Combat Power, Battle Fuel and Assault.
And the products have carved out a robust niche in the marketplace. Starting in 2009, when the company did its first $1 million in sales, MusclePharm grew to $74 million in sales in 2012, showing more than 300% year-over-year growth in that time frame.
The new study, which was funded by MusclePharm, included 17 healthy, recreationally-trained, college-aged men to consume either one scoop of the supplement or placebo every day for 28 days.
Results showed no adverse effects for clinical blood markers in the kidneys or liver, and resting heart rate and blood pressure were also not significantly affected.
Significant improvements were observed for percentage body fat in the Assault group, and for fat free mass, while no such effects were observed in the placebo group.
In addition, improvements in aerobic capacity and leg press performance were only observed in the supplement group.
“More research is needed to determine the performance benefits of long-term ingestion with concurrent resistance training using similar products, as well as the safety of using ingestion periods lasting longer than 28 days,” wrote the researchers. “However, researchers should feel confident regarding the safety and efficacy of investigations up to 28 days using similar doses of supplements containing caffeine, B-vitamins, amino acids, creatine, and beta-alanine in this population.”
